The aim of the project was to immerse myself in a more advanced level of typography. It was a challenge of continuous text matter, structure, details, and appropriate visual design. Jost Hochuli, an eminent Swiss typographer and designer once said: ‘Macro-typography – typography as a whole, known also as ‘layout’ or graphic design – is concerned with the general visual concept, format, the size and placing of type areas and illustrations, and the design of headings and captions. ‘Micro-typography’ deals with the detail of letters/fonts/punctuation themselves and the relationship between letter-spacing and words, words-spacing and lines, and interlinear spacing and the columns of type.’
The brief required to use two conventional typefaces suitable for continuous text matter; I chose Niveau Grotesk (sans-serif) which is based on geometric principles with various extravagant details and Minion Pro (serif), inspired by the timeless beauty of the fonts of the late Renaissance. Many changes were made throughout this project because the more I experimented the more I found better ways to align the text.
