The most complex brief I have worked on so far is from the ISTD Student Assessment Scheme, 2022. The project brief I chose was 4: A Colourful Story. It had to explore and express the use, meaning and significance of one particular colour in the culture of my choice. The colour I went for was green; it just took me back to my childhood, a period in which I used to read Romanian fairy tales. And how does this relate to the colour green? In Romanian fairy tales, often two emperors appear: the Green Emperor and the Red Emperor. Fairy tales are one of the oldest types of literature which essentially appeared in the popular culture and later on headed into cult literature in the 19th century. The aim is to communicate the green from a 19th century Romanian fairy tale The Story of Harap-Alb written by I. Creanga and the green from my own 21st century Romanian ‘fairy’ tale.

The content of the fairy tale is built around 6 chapters where the author mentioned the word 'green' 22 times (17 times for the Green Emperor and 5 times for other elements). I want to create 'one year of green', adding to the 6 fairy tale chapters, another 6 from just a tale. This publication is addressed to those who are interested in finding out more about the meaning of green in a Romanian fairy tale and the significance of the colour green to the one who designed the book.
